Three tiers of smooth, snow-white icing conceal a klah cake of so rich a quality that the cake itself has assumed a reddish hue-- the Pernese red velvet cake. Each tier is two layers of this luscious cake separated by a thin layer of whipped cream and halved black cherries, the cherries themselves having been jarred from the summertime to ensure softened sweetness. Rich, luxuriant, dark, it's the kind of cake that a person asks for "a very small slice" and then feels ridiculously guilty when going back for seconds. But that's the fun of wedding cake, isn't it?
Although simple in design, the filigree that decorates these three tiers likely took hours to complete. Decorated in simple, Fortian brown, the dark icing stands out notably against the white backdrop, patternless but intricate. Curls and leaf-like designs hang randomly here and there, evoking the delicacy of lace with fine twists and loops and tiny, artfully speckled hearts. A necklace of brown beading circles the base of each layer of the cake, and the whole thing sits on a plate trimmed with lace on a table laden with flowers of the Lady's choosing. Not the most romantic-looking cake, true, but it's striking in its simple elegance.
